  • Hoosier Uplands Head Start

Hoosier Uplands has been providing Head Start services since the program's inception in 1965.  Head Start is a family centered child development program designed to provide a safe, healthy environment for those who attend. Head Start provides children with activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally and physically. The Head Start staff recognize that parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. Head Start staff welcome parental involvement in Head Start activities and will work with parents as partners in their child's educational activities. Head Start serves nutritious meals and provides medical, dental, vision, speech and hearing screenings for each child enrolled.  Transportation is also available to most of the children enrolled in the Head Start Program. The Hoosier Uplands Head Start Program is funded to serve a total of 270 children in the four county service area of Lawrence, Martin, Orange and Washington Counties of Indiana.

In Lawrence County, children living in the North Lawrence Community School District attend Head Start classes in Bedford at 710 6th Street. Children living in the Mitchell Community School District attended classes at 1240 Orchard Street in Mitchell. In Martin County the Head Start Center is located at 401 S. Oak Street in Loogootee. Orange County Head Start classes meet in the agency's facility at 308 South Oak Street in Paoli. Washington County Head Start classes are held at the Head Start Center in Salem at 801 W. Walnut Street.

Children who are four years of age before June 1 and whose families meet certain income guidelines are eligible to attend Head Start classes provided by the Hoosier Uplands Head Start Program. In some areas, children who were three years of age before the June 1 deadline and whose family income meets the established guidelines are eligible to attend Head Start.
