Program Information

What is Head Start?

Since it's inception in 1965, Head Start has succeeded by promoting school readiness in children and self-sufficiency for their families through the following components:

Early Childhood Education and Development
Health and Safety
Family Services
Mental Health
Literacy
Nutrition
Disabilities
Partnerships
Volunteerism
Transportation
Parent Involvement

Head Start has long known that to succeed in school and later in life, children must be healthy, nourished, socially competent, and have a healthy self-esteem, as well as strong, supportive, caring families.  Staff members meet families where they are, get to know them, find their strengths, and help them set and reach self-improvement goals.
