- 21st
Century Community Learning Centers Program
Hoosier Uplands was
awarded funding from the Indiana Department of Education to
provide after school services under the 21st Century Community
Learning Centers Program. The program is held at the
following elementary schools: Burris-Mitchell, Throop-Paoli, and West
Washington.
The focus of this program is to
provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for children.
The program greatly benefits students' academic
achievement levels through tutoring and homework assistance,
computer based programs, and parent education forums. In
addition, the program offers alcohol, tobacco and other drug
prevention programming, recreational activities, and a
nutritious snack for participants each school day.
The funding has enabled Hoosier
Uplands to employ three part-time licensed teachers and
approximately 21 part-time
program assistants.
At Burris Elementary in Mitchell,
100 students from kindergarten through 5th grade are enrolled in the program
and approximately 15 remain on a waiting list.
At Throop Elementary in Paoli, 70
students in kindergarten through 6th grade are enrolled in the
program.
At West Washington Elementary, 70
students in kindergarten through 6th grade are enrolled in the
program.
The total amount of
funding awarded to each school under the contracts that run through
May 2008 is: Mitchell $164,862, Paoli
$164,862, and West Washington $154,094.
The Southeast/South Central Indiana
AHEC serves as the project evaluator.
Linda Tarr serves
as the project's primary point of contact.
