Through funding provided by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Rural
Health Policy, Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) and
training will be provided to rural counties in the state
during a three-year project period.
The goals of the Indiana
State-Wide RAED Project are to decrease the number of deaths
associated with Ventricular Fibrillation Sudden Cardiac
Arrest, to increase the number of AEDs available for use, to
increase the number of professionals/residents trained in
the use of AEDs, and to increase the effective use of AEDs
in rural Indiana.
The project partners (Indiana
State Emergency Management Agency, Indiana State Office of
Rural Health, Indiana Rural Health Association, West Central
Indiana Area Health Education Center, St. Vincent Health,
Indiana State Police, and Hoosier Uplands) will be placing
at least one AED in designated whole rural counties,
providing CPR and AED training, and collecting information
regarding the use and condition of the AEDs.
The approach to AED placement and
training will be in three phases:
- Year 1: September 1, 2003
- August 31, 2004
Southern Indiana Counties: Crawford, Daviess,
Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings,
Knox, Lawrence, Martin, Orange, Perry, Pike, Ripley,
Spencer, Sullivan, Switzerland, and Washington
- Year 2: September 1, 2004
- August 31, 2005
Central Indiana Counties: Bartholomew, Blackford,
Brown, Decatur, Fayette, Fountain, Franklin, Grant,
Henry, Jay, Montgomery, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Randolph,
Rush, Union, Warren, and Wayne
- Year 3: September 1, 2005
- August 31, 2006
Northern Indiana Counties: Benton, Carroll, Cass,
Fulton, Jasper, Kosciusko, LaPorte, LaGrange, Marshall,
Miami, Newton, Noble, Pulaski, Starke, Steuben, Wabash
and White
