Early Head Start Program
Many recent studies in the field of child development prove that the period from birth to age three is a critical time in a child’s development. In response to this fact, Early Head Start was established by Congress with the reauthorization of the Head Start Act in1994 to help ensure that all infants and toddlers get a good and healthy start in life. Hoosier Uplands began providing Early Head Start services in December 1999.We are proud to offer the Early Head Start program to qualifying families in Lawrence, Orange, Martin, and Washington counties. Currently we serve 66 pregnant women, infants, toddlers, and their families on a year-round basis.

Early Head Start offers child development services to pregnant mothers and families with infants and young children, birth to age three. We partner with parents to:

*Promote good health care, mental wellness, safety awareness, and good nutrition for all family members
*Provide opportunities for personal and professional growth
*Educate families about community resources and social services
*To be involved in program activities and the community
*Build strong foundations for their families
*Promote parents as being the best teacher for their child
*Offer experiences based on the child’s development and age
*Transition children to appropriate placements, such as pre-school or day-care facility

The program goals are to support parents as they help their young children grow and develop, and also to provide resources and support to families. The Early Head Start home-based program supports children and their families through one and half hour home visits, once a week, and group socializations experiences, twice a month. EHS home visits’ provide individualized, comprehensive services to support and strengthen the relationships between infants, toddlers, and their parents. Parents are encouraged and supported to later recreate and build on the activities that are introduced during the home visits. Early Head Start home visitors work with parents to set and work towards family and child goals that meet the needs of their household.
